Shirts being sold for Blackwell boy battling cancer

The Blackwell community is rallying around a four-year-old undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

Wyatt McPhee recently was diagnosed with Langerhans cell histiocytosis, which caused a cancerous tumor to develop on his spine. This, in turn, caused a compressed fracture and a small hole to develop in his skull.

He began chemotherapy treatments May 16 and will continue them weekly for at least a year.

Blackwell Public Schools started a fundraiser before the end of the school year to raise money for McPhee’s treatment by selling “Team Wyatt” t-shirts.

The initiative was started by McPhee’s Pre-K teacher, Brittany Turner.

“This has been very important to me,” Turner said. “Being a teacher, the kids in your classroom become your own. I would do anything for them, and this is the least I could do to help.”

So far, Turner said she has taken more than 200 shirt orders.

All donations received from the sale of the shirts will go to McPhee's family to help with medical bills and travel expenses while he undergoes treatment.

McPhee also has a GoFundMe page. As of Monday, the page had raised $1,120 towards a goal of $5,000.
