Maroon massacre as Perry wipe Blackwell 42-16
After falling to Tonkawa 40-6 on September 15th, in a game that saw the Maroons trailing 12-0 at halftime, only to give up a boatload of points in the 2nd half, the Blackwell Maroons hosted the Perry Maroons on September 22nd, in the game with the opposite results.
The Blackwell Maroons gave up 42 first-half points, and they held the visiting Maroons scoreless in the 2nd half, eventually falling 42-16. The Perry offense was a first-half juggernaut that the home Maroons didn’t have an answer for.
Facing 3rd and 7 on their opening drive, Perry was able to rattle off a 61-yard TD run on an option pitch to the right side. The PAT kick was good, and the visiting team led 7-0 less than a minute into the game. Perry attempted an onside kick which was fielded by Zaine McDonald at midfield.
Facing a 4th and 7 from the Perry 47-yard line, Blackwell punted, and the ball was fielded by the Perry returner at his own 5-yard line. The Blackwell return team hemmed up the returner and forced him to retreat into his owned end zone where he was tackled by Stoney Hutson and Jason Osgood for a safety, bringing the score to 7-2 Perry.
Blackwell returned the ensuing free kick to the Perry 37-yard line. Blackwell drove for a first down to the Perry 26-yard line but turned the ball over on a fumble at the Perry 25- yard line with 7:41 left in the 1st quarter. Perry drove the field and completed a pass just short of the goal line, but the receiver was able to battle his way into the endzone for another score.
The PAT kick was no good, but a roughing the kicker call gave Perry another shot and 2nd kick was good, bringing the score to 14-2 with 5:22 left in the 1st quarter.
A few plays later, a Blackwell pass over the middle was tipped and returned to the endzone by a Perry linebacker.
A block in the back penalty on the return negated the TD and set Perry up on the Blackwell 26-yard line.
Facing 3rd and 13 from the Blackwell 28-yard line, Perry completed a TD pass to the left. The PAT kick was good and the Perry Maroons led the Blackwell Maroons 21-2 with 2:29 left in the 1st. Saben Batten had a nice kick return for Blackwell advancing the ball 20-yards to the Blackwell 32-yard line.
However, a personal foul penalty after the play backed Blackwell up to their own 17-yard line.
A few plays later, a bobbled handoff to Kruz Goff was fumbled, and Perry took over Blackwell’s 33-yard line. On 3rd down, Perry completed a 30-yard TD pass to right.
The Pat kick was good, and Perry led 28-2 with a single second left in the 1st quarter. The Perry kickoff was returned by Laker Ingram the Blackwell 40-yard line.
A long pass from Kevin Rios to Peyton Head moved Blackwell to the Perry 48-yard line and gave them a first down. Unfortunately, the drive stalled and Blackwell was forced to punt, and the ball was downed at the Perry 9-yard line.
A penalty during the return kick moved Perry up to their own 24-yard line. A few plays later, Perry completed a 67-yard TD pass to the right. The PAT kick was good, and Perry led 35-2 with 8:07 left in the first half. The Perry kickoff was returned 35 yards by Batten to midfield.
Blackwell’s offense stalled and punted after 4 downs. Perry drove deep into Blackwell territory, but the Blackwell defense was finally able to hold and took over on downs at their own 12-yard line. The Blackwell offense was again stuffed and forced to punt.
The punt was blocked and recovered in the Blackwell endzone, adding to Perry’s lead. The PAT kick was good, and Perry Led 42-2 at the half. The start of the 3rd quarter saw a big change for Blackwell with Maroon skill players Jason Osgood, Kruz Goff, and Zaine McDonald taking the field wearing linemen numbers and playing on the offensive line.
Both defenses held firm for the quarter, as no points were scored. Blackwell opened the 4th quarter facing a 3rd down and 8 yards to go from their own 17-yard line. Zaiden Root was able to gain a first down on a good run, and several good runs by Ingram moved Blackwell down the field.
The Perry defense stiffened up though, forcing Blackwell to Punt from their own 28- yard line.
Roots punt was a boomer that rolled down to the 36-yard line. Perry drove to the Blackwell 44- yard line before being forced to punt.
Blackwell took over on their own 19-yard line. The Blackwell offense then had their longest play of the night, when Kevin Rios connected with Peyton Head over the middle for a 45-yard gain. Rios was then able to scramble away from pressure, find the left sideline, and scoot 45 yards down the left sideline for Blackwell’s first touchdown of the game.
Rios’ 2-point pass to Charlie Lux on the right side was good, and Blackwell trailed 42-10 with 3:54 left in the game.
A squib kick by Goff was downed by Perry on their own 31-yard line. The Blackwell defense drove Perry backward and had them facing a 4th and 35-yards to go from the 28-yard line.
The Perry punt went out of bounds at the Blackwell 37-yard line with 1:50 left in the game. Kevin Rios was again able to scramble his way out of heavy pressure and ran all the way to the Perry 7-yard line before stepping out of bounds.
On 3rd and goal to go from inside the Perry 1-yard line, Peyton Head took a direct snap from a wildcat formation and raced to the left side for a touchdown. The PAT attempt was no good. The Blackwell squib kick was fielded by Perry who then took a knee to run out the clock and leave Wheeler-Huston field with the 42- 16 victory.
With the loss, Blackwell fell to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in district play. The Maroons travel to Edmond on Friday, September 29thwhere they will face the Oklahoma Christian Crusaders at 7 p.m.
