Roberta “Bert” Pryor

Roberta Marie “Bert” Pryor was born April 6, 1942 in Caldwell, Kansas, the oldest daughter born to Robert Lee and Thelma Catherine (Ewertz) Vavra. Most of her childhood was spent on a farm near Sokol Hall in rural Bluff City. She attended her early education at Blackstone school. She spent time with her Ewertz grandparents and was able to attend St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Conway Springs. Roberta married Melvin “Leon” Pryor on August 20, 1973, and he welcomed her three children, Lynette, Gina, and Lee, as his own. They made their home in Blackwell, Oklahoma. Roberta spent her early years as a homemaker. After moving to Blackwell, she worked at Blackwell Public Schools in the cafeteria and as a night janitor, at the nursing home and Braums, and delivered the Blackwell Tribune newspaper. Roberta enjoyed going to garage sales and antiquing, having a booth in Ashby’s for many years. She and Leon enjoyed day trips through Oklahoma and Kansas, to visit family and friends. After retiring, she was often found socializing over a cup of coffee. Some of her most favorite times were Vavra family gatherings. She was well known for her fun-loving personality and humor. On June 4, 2024, Roberta passed away at Caldwell Regional Medical Center in Caldwell, Kansas at the age of 82. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon on May 14, 2008; her parents; an infant sister, Rose Ann; her sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Ronnie Schmidt; and her former husband and father of her children, Eugene Mund.
