Blackwell Firefighter Battling Cancer: Community Rallies Around Local Hero
July 21, 2025

A familiar face in Blackwell’s emergency response community is now facing a battle of his own—and the town he has long served is stepping up to help.
Nick, a firefighter and paramedic with the Blackwell Fire Department and a volunteer firefighter with the Kaw City Fire Department, was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. Known for his dedication to saving lives, Nick is now relying on the support of the very community he has protected for years.
“As a dedicated firefighter/paramedic with the Blackwell Fire Department, and a volunteer firefighter with the Kaw City Fire Department, he’s risked his life countless times to protect our community, our homes, and our families. Now, it’s our turn to stand with him,” reads a GoFundMe page launched to support Nick’s medical journey.
The financial burden of cancer is significant, covering not just treatment but travel, lost wages, and everyday living expenses. The fundraiser was created to help ease those costs, so Nick and his family can focus on healing.
Nick serves as Chief of EMS Operations and is a Fire Captain with the Kaw City Volunteer Fire Department. Fellow firefighters describe him as one of the best in the business—dedicated, skilled, and always ready to help.
“If anyone can come out of this journey stronger than they started, it’s for sure Nick,” the Kaw City Volunteer Fire Department posted on social media. “Any support for him and his family would be appreciated.”
The community is encouraged to donate and share the fundraiser. Every contribution, no matter the amount, goes directly toward covering Nick’s treatment and supporting his family during this difficult time.
The GoFundMe campaign, titled “Stand With Nick: A Firefighter’s Cancer Fight,” can be found at:
In a career defined by bravery and selflessness, Nick now faces a new kind of challenge—and he won’t have to face it alone.
For those wishing to help, donations can be made online or by reaching out to members of the Kaw City and Blackwell fire departments.
A healthy Kay County requires great community news.
