1986 Maroons Baseball Team to Be Honored April 10 at Morgan Field
April 08, 2026
The 1986 Blackwell Maroons High School baseball team will be recognized Friday, April 10, during a special ceremony at Morgan Field, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the team’s memorable run to the state championship game.
First pitch for the evening is scheduled for 7 p.m., with members of the 1986 squad expected to be honored on the field prior to the game.
In a letter sent to former players, Blackwell school officials and coaches described the season as a remarkable achievement that continues to inspire athletes, coaches and fans throughout the community. The team finished as state runner-up, cementing its place as one of the standout squads in Blackwell baseball history.
Organizers say the recognition ceremony is intended not only to celebrate the team’s accomplishments, but also to thank players for the legacy they helped build. That legacy, they noted, remains an important part of Blackwell’s athletic tradition and serves as motivation for current and future Maroons.
The 1986 team compiled an impressive season record, highlighted by multiple district and regional victories and a strong postseason run that carried them all the way to the state finals, where they ultimately finished runner-up.
School officials, including Head Baseball Coach Justin Billingsley, Superintendent Shawn Haskins, Athletic Director Mark Meador and High School Principal Gerry Magin, encouraged former players and their families to attend the event.
“We would be honored to celebrate this milestone with you,” the letter stated.
The April 10 recognition will give fans and the community an opportunity to revisit one of Blackwell baseball’s most historic seasons while honoring the players who made it possible.
A healthy Kay County requires great community news.
