Blackwell Library showcases special Homecoming display

The Blackwell Public Library is celebrating Homecoming this week with a huge, new display that honors returning classes dating back to 1924. 

This “Maroon Memory Lane” display opened last Friday and features a shelf of books that were popular releases for the respective Homecoming years (1984, 1989, 1994, etc) as well as poster boards that include yearbook cutouts of the returning decades along with the yearbooks themselves available for patrons to look through. 

The display is accessible during library hours 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Saturday.

“This is an exciting opportunity for our patrons to come in and see Homecoming like never before at Blackwell Public Library,” said Director of Operations Talyn Spence, “whether you’re coming to town just to visit or you live here, we encourage everyone to see what we’ve done here to honor one of the biggest annual events in Blackwell.” 

Along with the Maroon Memory Lane, the Library also has displays for Hispanic Heritage Month, Cozy Reads for Fall, and their “Twisters” display in honor of the library’s mention in the 2024 film “Twisters” which features books and news articles relating to Blackwell’s tornadic history. 

“We post new displays frequently,” said Head Librarian Tina Cavin, “there is something new every month and we also do smaller displays for specific days or events.” 

The Blackwell Public Library recently showcased a massive display honoring the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. 

September is also National Library Card Month. Those who register for a library card can have their name entered into a drawing to win a Kindle e-reader: all you have to do is either register for a library card yourself or refer someone to get one.

The Library is also planning a horror-themed book display for Halloween along with Native American Heritage Month, Veterans Day, and several other occasions.
